New Regional CFA Booth

At his first Board Meeting last June, President Hamza said he wanted to see CFA Booths at shows all over the country. He directed the Regions to buy them and have them on display at our shows. Our Region is the first to have one. The graphics design was created for us by Teresa Keiger and includes a Persian and a Siamese as they are the longhair and shorthair breeds being registered the most today. Ideally, this booth will be present at our region's shows and be staffed by friendly exhibitors who can answer the public's questions. However, the booth can also be self-service with CFA pamphlets placed near the booth if your show does not have the manpower to staff it. Discuss it with your show committee and let me know if you want us to ship you the booth. The booth is five feet high and eight feet wide and easily sits on an 8-foot table. It's very easy to set up. With no directions, I was able to set it up in less than two minutes.
The Good Stuff
I reserve this section of each Newsletter to make a positive comment about people who make a difference.

Last July Allene Tartaglia moved to Florida after 28 years as a CFA employee. We were fortunate to have her remain with us during a transition period while CFA hired a new Operations Manager to run our Central Office. That period ended in September and, sadly, Allene is no longer with CFA. She performed many roles during her years with our organization: Special Projects Director, Associate Executive Director, and most recently, as Executive Director. Many of you have had the opportunity to deal with Allene and you have your own special memories and can attest to the wonderful service she always provided our customers. Those who worked on various CFA projects such as an Annual, the CFA International Cat Show, Meet The Breeds, etc. know that she is an incredibly organized person who has the ideal qualities needed to make things hum along without glitches. Allene is known for her sunny smile and easy-going disposition. While we will miss her contributions to CFA, she is now a resident of our Region and I hope we will see her at various CFA shows and events. We wish her well in her future endeavors and know wherever she ends up working will be fortunate to have her.
CFA's New Director of Operations

Born and raised in Bergen County, NJ, Jim Nicolaus started his professional career with publishing giant, Simon & Schuster Inc. located in Upper Saddle River, NJ as Manager of Office Services within the Facilities/Operations Division. After almost a 20-year career, Jim and his wife-to-be decided to relocate to Plantation, Florida. Jim picked up his career with another non-profit organization called Our Kids of Miami-Dade Monroe, Inc. Our Kids specializes in child welfare services for the state of Florida. As Director of Facility Services, one of Jim's major accomplishment with Our Kids was the project management of a new and modernized 15,000 sq. ft. corporate headquarter facility.
Due to personal reasons Jim decided to relocate back to New Jersey. Jim has had two cats, a British Shorthair and a Main Coon. His interests are watching and going to Yankee and Giant games, golf and most important being with his daughter Julia.
"One of my major goals for the upcoming year is to contribute in every way for a smooth, cost effect and timely move of the Central Office to our new home in Alliance, without sacrificing the high quality of customer service the fancy expects and deserves".
CFA's Moving to Ohio

President Hamza recently announced that CFA is purchasing a building in Alliance, Ohio, and Central Office operations will move there from our current headquarters in New Jersey. The building is a former bank and sits right on Main Street! It has three floors plus a basement with a loading dock. The third floor has more than enough space to house our staff and the first floor is being rented to the CFA Foundation for a cat museum! CFA is also purchasing a new computer system which will bring our operations into the 21st century. Current staff were offered the ability to move to Ohio, keep their current salary, and get some assistance with moving expenses. Understandably, many on our staff have ties to the area and will not be able to relocate and we will miss them and their expertise. Several current staff members will be moving with us including our new Operations Manager, Jim Nicolaus. The move is expected to take place in late Spring or early Summer. Click on the photo of the building to see more pictures.
The CFA Foundation

Since the first floor of the new CFA Central Office in Ohio will be rented to the CFA Foundation for a cat museum, you might be interested in learning more about this organization. They have been collecting material for decades but very little of it has actually been on display due to lack of an appropriate venue. The Foundation Board has provided some mini-displays at recent CFA International Cat Shows and Meet The Breeds last year but that is only a small sampling of what is in its collection. Click on the medal to read more.
New CFA Website

Yes, our current website is in need of updating with some new features, a fresh look, and improved search capabilities. CFA contracted out a major overhaul of its website and the new & improved site is expected to be in production October 4th. Next on the agenda is a new computer system. CFA is contracting to do that, too. We expect to be able to do many things online once the new system is in place. Look for the new computer system to be in operation next Spring. CFA is investing heavily into improving the way we do business.
DNA Testing to Resume
Last April CFA cancelled its contract for DNA testing. CFA will resume DNA testing at the beginning of October. Information will soon be provided on how you can have your cats DNA tested via CFA's contract with Texas A&M. It will be a seamless transition from Shelterwood labs to the service lab at Texas A&M, and they will provide us with the same type of SNP testing and they are even adding three new tests. Dr. Cothran from Texas A&M promises a turn-around time of 2 weeks and said that most results get out of his lab in 10 days. We have a brand new facility, the equipment is state of the art. You are encouraged to make use of this testing service.

>Plans for our 2010 Southern Region Annual at the Hyatt Reston Town Center are moving along with various committee chairs working on the details of their responsibilities. Jacqui Bennett and Tim Fowler did a site visit at the hotel recently to determine vendor space availability and Jacqui is pulling together all of the required information, contract and pricing to offer to those who will surely wish to showcase their merchandise at our event. Karen Boyce has fundraising as a primary focus and we are on track for meeting or exceeding our goals. The Capital Elite group is filling quickly, and when pending revenue is received, only about twenty more commemorative pins will remain. Please consider supporting your Annual meeting by becoming part of the Capital Elite by visiting the Southern Region website learn about this and other fundraising opportunities. The Capital Elite list has been updated and new photos on the Flickr link will be updated very soon to reflect current members. http://cfasouthern.org/2011annual/elite-members.html
The end of this year is in sight, and by then we expect to have current information to link to CFA's soon-to-be-unveiled website. With CFA's recent staff changes, upcoming move to Ohio and new computer system, our Annual will be a "first" in many ways, and we know our team is prepared to face the associated challenges. We are looking forward to meeting and exceeding those challenges while working with a very dedicated Southern Region workforce!

Show Scheduling

One of the most time-consuming jobs in the Region is show scheduling. Clubs that are interested in a different/better date for their annual show should check the online show schedule on our region's web site and then chat with our Regional Show Scheduler, Kathryn Brady. It reflects traditional dates for shows within our Region. If your club decides to not hold a show on your traditional date, even if it is for just one year, please inform our Regional Show Scheduler. It's possible another club would like to use your date even if for just one year. Click on the graphic above (no, that's not Kathryn) to link to our online calendar of shows.
Along those lines, Star City CF has decided to not hold their show in Roanoke VA on their traditional date - the first weekend of July, 2011.
Regional Photos

At the beginning of each month we download more photos taken at our shows the previous month. You can view them by going to our Regional web site and clicking on the icon of the photographer. I was hoping more people around the Region would participate by submitting photos but so far MaryK and I are the primary ones submitting photos. If you want to continue with this feature, we need more folks to submit photos.

Oct. 9-10 - Huntsville CC/Emerald Coast CF, Huntsville AL
