North Atlantic Regional Director

John Gardiner
I am sure you all join me in wishing John Gardiner a speedy recovery from his quadruple by-pass surgery this week.  Those who have experience with this type of surgery explain that it is a long road to recovery.  John has had 18 stints.  He had a 99% blockage in several arteries on Tuesday and this surgery was the only option.

Show Rule Changes Effective Imediately

Show Rules
At the Board Meeting held earlier thiis month, the Board granted approval for clubs to offer Top 15 HHP finals if 45 or more are entered in the show.   Also, clubs wishing to honor a particular breed/division  may offer Top 5 breed/division wins.   The ribbon colors for 3B, 4B and 5B of breed/division are up to the club. There have been a number of requests for these expanded wins from individual clubs and they have always been approved, so rather than require clubs to request it, the Show Rules were changed to permit it.

Other Show Rule Poposals

I anticipate the printed Minutes will be available very soon, but here are some notes I shared with the CFA List regarding changes.

Judging Program Advancements

applause
At this month's Board Meeting Jacqui Bennett was advanced from Trainee to Apprentice SH judge.   Melanie Morgan was advanced to Approved SH judge and accepted as a LH Trainee.   Congratulations to both of these fine judges.  These were the only advancements for judges in our Region.

Judging Program Changes

At the recent Board Meeting some changes were approved which affect the qualifications required before applying. For example, an Applicant must have had a Regional Win or a National Breed Win. Additional changes approved will make it possible for people to advance through the program faster.  Check the Minutes when they come out.

New Clubs

Once upon a time, the CFA Central Office would notify potentially affected clubs when an application for a new club was received.  I recently learned that's not happening any more.   You now need to check the CFA website to learn what clubs are applying for CFA membership. Now that I know CFA is not notifying our clubs of new applicants, I will send a notice to our SR List for any here in our Region, but also check the CFA website to see which clubs are being established.   It might be outside our Region but of interest to you, such as a breed club.  There were no Southern Region clubs applying for membership at our recent Board Meetings. I believe the last Southern Region club to apply for membership was Maine Street CC at the February, 2009, meeting.

CFA White Pages

White Pages
Since the demise of the printed Almanac, the CFA White Pages (Phone Directory) has only been available online.   The printed version is coming back and will be available in early 2011.   The deadline to be included, or to make changes, is November 1, 2010.   Click on the graphic to the right to link to the form you need to complete if you want to be added or to make changes.  Royal Canin is providing funding which will enable CFA to provide this Directory both online and in print.

CFA's DNA Testing FAQs

CFA's DNA testing, with samples collected and submitted by owners, will be handled using SNP array genetic evaluation. This novel state-of-the-art testing procedure can definitively establish parentage, identity, genetic disease, and traits such as color. A paternity/identity fingerprint, as well as an up-to-date genetic disease and color profile certificate, will be produced as the result of DNA testing of individual cats. This cutting edge testing panel is available at the reasonable cost of $55.00 per cat.

Roger Brown
, Chair of CFA's Scientific Advisory Committee, has provided answers to commonly asked questions.   The most common question is whether or not we can have just one test performed (PKD, for example) and the answer is that they can not do that at this time.   Texas A&M is looking into possibly performing just this one test but it is likely to be almost as expensive as having the entire set of tests run and there will be a delay in getting your results.   Click here for the FAQs.

CFA Club Media Kit and Publicity Guide

microphone
Information has recently been added to the CFA website which can help your club promote your show to the general public.  The guide offers step-by-step advice on handling a publicity campaign for your club's show and even gives sample fill-in-the-blank press materials.  Every club wants good gate but many do not know how to achieve it.  This guide can be a big help. Click on the microphone graphic to link to the website.

Update: CFA Website

In my last eNewsletter I passed along news from the CFA President that the redesigned CFA website would be in production on 10/04.  If you visited the site this week, you noticed that the old site is still there.   Jerry told me yesterday that they are doing some last minute testing and the new site should be in production "very soon."  He wants to make sure everything is right before moving it into production.

Fund-Raising for the 2011 CFA Annual

Shadowbox
Throughout this show season we will be holding a number of fund-raisers to support the Annual being hosted by our Region.  The current project is a raffle for a gorgeous Shadow Box created by Jacqui Bennett.  The raffle will wrap up at the Cotton States show in Georgia the first weekend of November.   You can buy raffle tickets either at Southern Region shows (e.g., Hunstville this weekend) or you can purchase tickets via PayPay.  For more information, click on the Shadow Box photo.

Breeder Assistance Program

Breeder Assistance Program
If you know of a breeder in trouble contact CFA's Breeder Assistance & Breed Rescue Programs before you call Animal Control.  It is more humane to the cats; seizures are very stressful to the cats!  Our Regional Coordinator for these programs is Charlene Campbell

From a Volunteer Fire Company

Fire Dept
"I am an officer with Providence Volunteer Fire Company in  Towson  Maryland .

The Colonial Annapolis Cat Fanciers' Association donated feline oxygen masks to the fire company several years ago.

In the early morning hours of  September 12, 2010, we were called to a house fire in our district.  I am very excited to say that the feline "victim" survived the fire. If not for the generous donation of this specialized equipment,  Providence would have been only partially prepared for this emergency. We could have put the fire out, but we would not have been able to properly deliver much needed oxygen to the "resident" that needed it the most !

Please check out the Providence Website and the photos of Lieutenant Stephen Pearce administering oxygen to the rescued cat."
